Reduced Cases Of Lung Cancer In High Elevations 

A recent study has uncovered some very interesting details on lung cancer. The study revealed that living at higher altitudes reduces risk of lung cancer in not only smokers but also non-smokers too.

By controlling for variables that are associated with high rates of cancer the study which was co-authored by a student at the Perelman School of Medicine uncovered that for every 1,000 rise in elevation the rate of lung cancer in the population decreased by around 7 cases per 100,000 people.

The same effect was not seen with others such as breast and prostate cancer. Something that might explain this is due to the direct nature of the lungs and its use of oxygen. Higher elevations results in less inhaled oxygen, even as much as a third less than low elevation areas.

Other factors that were also studied included sunlight , precipitation, temperature and pollution.
