I have seen this question pop up time and time again so I thought it would be good to start off our new FAQ section on this question.

There are two sides to this question with some people saying that e cigs are ok to use whilst pregnant as they are the better alternative to smoking, whilst others say once you become pregnant it is totally unacceptable.

The arguments for using the electronic cigarette include:

Women Who Are Pregnant & Quit Smoking Have Healthier Babies:

This really is a no brainer…if you are with child and you are inhaling toxic chemicals via smoking then this will have consequences for your unborn child’s health. E cigs don’t contain the thousands of harmful chemicals and carcinogens found in a regular cigarette so therefore they are a healthier alternative. There also seems to be a massive misunderstanding that some women think that if they smoked in their first trimester that there is no point quitting in the next two. I don’t know where this came from but it definitely has no ring of truth to it – ideally you should quit before you try for a child, but as we all know it is not always as simple as that and things don’t always work to plan so make sure as soon as you find out your pregnant you try and kick the habit.

Electronic Cigarettes Are Good At Preventing Stress:

Some argue that if a women is pregnant and is asked to quit it can be particularly difficult and distressing. This can affect the baby’s health as the mother will become increasing anxious and have unhealthy stress levels. By using the e cig the mother can start to wean herself off nicotine and break the addiction in a safer manner.

Electronic Cigarettes Doesn’t Affect your Appetite:

There have been countless studies that have linked smoking to disruption in the mothers food consumption. When a woman becomes pregnant she is basically eating for two so it is important for her to have healthy nutritious meals. If her food intake is either inadequate or she is not having a well balanced diet i.e. not burger and chips every night then there is a chance the baby could be under developed and even suffer from a poor immunity.

Electronic Cigarettes Can Avoid Negative Health Issues:

Similar to above smoking whilst pregnant can cause a child to be born with a low birth weight. This can have some pretty serious side effects including an increased likelihood to develop learning disorders such as dyslexia and ADHD. Also the babies will be more susceptible to diseases throughout their life as they will have a poor immunity.

Conclusion

As earlier stated the best way to protect your child is to quit before you become pregnant. If the child was an unexpected, amazing surprise, then you should try and quit as soon as you see the positive result on your pregnancy test. Electronic cigarettes should only be used during pregnancy as a last resort and only after first speaking to your GP.

Share or like to inform pregnant women who smoke of the dangers smoking can cause to their unborn child.

Footballs Greatest Manager Retires

Yesterday was a very sad day for football. The beautiful game lost one of the best managers…sorry the best manager, ever to embrace the game. I remember sitting down next to my dad and watching this man, if you can call him that, on television. His passion and love for the game never wavered in all the 26 years he was at the helm of the best British football club, Manchester United. I feel it a privilege to have been witness to Sir Alex as he took on an average football club back in the late 1980s and transformed and remodeled it into his own image acquiring 38 trophies along his very successful management career.

The End Of An Era

Whether you love or hate him, it’s hard to find any true football fan that doesn’t hold the utter most respect for Ferguson and his dominance of English football. It was only 4 days ago Sir Alex said “I don’t have any plans to walk away from something special” only to make a U turn 3 days later by making the decision to retire. “The decision to retire is one I’ve thought a great deal about and one I have not taken lightly”. It is not known whether his health has any part to play in this monumental decision or the 71 year old man just feels it’s the right time to call it a day after already knocking Liverpool off their perch and recently claiming United’s 20 title.

Sir Alex has always had a no nonsense policy and has demanded the very best out of his players. When he arrived at the club he made it clear that things would be run his way in order to move the club in a forward fashion. In his own words he said “When I arrived at United, I was astonished to find that there was a club rule forbidding players to drink alcohol ‘less than two days before a game’. I replaced that feeble prohibition instantly with a rule that made it an offence for any player to drink while he was in training. Of course, I knew there was no way that ban would be observed but at least the new wording was a declaration of my attitude.” He understood that to be the best his players had to be in the best physical and mental condition possible. Two players named Paul McGrath and Norman Whiteside who chose to ignore the Scots warnings were shown the door after constantly abusing their bodies, mainly with excessive alcohol consumption. Ferguson also gave smoking the red card at the club and made it explicitly clear he didn’t want his players to use cigarettes.

No Smoke Without Fire

In stories that made the headlines Wayne Rooney apparently had a run in with Fergie after photos emerged in papers of the £250,000 a week striker having a smoke back in 2010. The fiery Scot has always taken a dim view of off field incidents that could potentially damage the clubs image and made it clear to Wayne that his behaviour was unacceptable…especially having a pre season friendly only days after.

Should Players Have The Right To Smoke?

I have had many a debate in the past with friends over this precise issue – should footballers have the choice to smoke? I personally believe that no matter how much they are paid and this that and the other at the end of the day if the club which they are a part of says they don’t want players to smoke then that should be it, full stop. If you don’t like the rules then they know where the door is, it really is as simple as that. Sure a player might be addicted before joining United but I am sure the club will help them in every way possible to help them to quit.

Chewing His Way To Success

As I am sure many of you who watch United know Sir Alex is no stranger to chewing gum. While it is not known the exact reason he seems to chew through packet after packet of gum it has been suggested that he started to help him curb his own smoking addiction. Chewing gum has also been credited with helping to alleviate stress which lets be honest with the amount of injury time, aka Fergie time, come backs Manchester United have amounted over the years it’s a wonder Wrigley’s can meet his chewing gum demands.

Although It is not yet known who will be his successor, David Moyes, manager of Everton FC, is the bookies favourite with the ‘Special One’ in close second it will take a special individual to take control of the club. I wish the new gaffer all the luck as in the world as taking control after Ferguson will be no easy task.

Through his high expectations and love for the game Ferguson has not only remodeled United but also English football as a whole. After building team after team of champion winning sides Sir Alex has set the high standard in which other teams have had to try and emulate in order to compete. I am proud to have been a part of his journey and wish him all the best for the future.

Are You Looking To Quit?

If you are a footballer looking to quit smoking in order to become a better athlete and using chewing gum like Ferguson doesn’t appeal to you there are other methods such as e cigarettes that can help you rid yourself of the expensive and damaging regular cigarettes. By using electronic cigarettes you can slowly wean your way off the nicotine and can even purchase no nicotine e liquid in which to vape. E cigs provide the user with a familiar way in which to quit smoking as by using the device the user mimics all the actions they would use when smoking.

Share to show your tribute to Alex Ferguson

Which E Cigarette Is Best For Me?

So you have quit smoking and are looking to buy your first electronic cigarette. First of all I would like to congratulate you on this massive achievement, this was no easy decision and quitting cigarettes is difficult, however you have made the right choice.

Looking online it can be a daunting experience for new vapers to buy their first device. I mean which is the best e cigarette? Should I get a manual or automatic battery? and how much should I spend? Don’t worry, like buying anything new it can be hard to know what is best and which to buy. For this reason I thought I would put together a little guide – below are the questions you should be asking yourself before you go out and buy one:

• Battery Life / Charging options

• Ease Of Use

• Cost

• Design and Feel

• Size

Battery Life / Charging Options

Without the battery your electronic cigarette is basically useless. It is the heart of the e cig and therefore needs to be able to last at least a full day (or around 300 to 350 puffs worth).

There are two types of battery to look out for.

1. Manual

2. Automatic

What’s the difference? Basically the manual battery has a button that needs to be pressed before taking a drag for the battery to activate whereas with the automatic this is just, well….automatic. One of the advantages to the manual is that you can heat up the e liquid before taking a drag.

Ease Of use

Back in the infancy of the device a typical electronic cigarette would be composed of 3 parts. You would have the battery, atomiser and the cartridge. This would make refilling the e cigs up quite messy with the liquid getting on clothing and furniture every time you wanted to ‘top up’. Nowadays the industry standard e cigarettes are a 2 piece design which makes changing the cartridge very simple as they now come pre-filled with the e liquid. Another added bonus of this design also means you get a fresh atomizer in each replacement.

Cost

We all love a bargain but sometimes it is better to spend that extra bit of money to ensure you get a quality product. The cheap, disposable e cigs that can be found in your local newsagents and petrol stations are ok but they are not a patch on the rechargeable / refillable ones available. At the end of the day its up to you how much you want to spend, as a good guide don’t go over £50. As you become more experienced you will may want to buy a more expensive electronic cigarette as well as all the varying accessories and different mods but to start with just get something fairly simple.

Design and Feel

The big question for me with this one is do you want the electronic cigarette to look real or not? Some people like to have one that mimics the real thing all the way down to how it looks while other people like to have it looking completely different. Unless you really want one that looks real I would suggest you get one that is easily recognisable as an electronic cigarette so that when you use it out in public there is no confusion.

Size

E cigs come in all shapes and sizes which is why you want one that is the right size for you. There are some that are the size of cigars, if not bigger. Again due to the fact most vapers don’t want to draw any unnecessary attention to themselves I would recommend that you don’t by one of the big bulky devices. Also I would be careful when buying micro e cigs as some of them compromise the battery for the size.

Summary

So to sum the above up it is recommended that a new vaper should look for an e cig that has a battery with a good life span, be easily distinguishable that it is not a regular cigarette, not be too big in size (and not to small the battery suffers) and be of a reasonable price. You don’t need to splash the cash but not be cheap either. E cig kits also are great for new vapers as they contain all the accessories and products needed for a beginner to get started on the road to a healthier life.

First of all I would just like to say I know this post might be a little bit insulting to you experienced Vapers out there but you never know you may just learn something, as for the rest of you I can only guess you have come to visit to learn more about vaping and the jargon surrounding it. This article has been wrote with new vapers in mind and with an ever increasing number of new people joining the community I thought I would write this post in order to help them get up to speed as quickly as possible.

So how many of you know your Atomizer from your Cartomizer? Or how about the difference between propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG)? No…well don’t you worry your little cotton socks because below you will find a summary of the most common words spoken as well as some of the confusing abbreviations commonly used by the vaping community.

The little dictionary below will have you speaking the lingo in no time at all…

Vaping Dictionary:

Atomizer

The atomizer is essentially the heating element in the electronic cigarette that produces the vapour. They come in many different varieties including some that generate more vapour, produce a better throat hit or intensify the flavour.

Battery

Everyone knows what a battery is and if you don’t, seriously where have you been? The batteries are normally lithium ion, can be recharged and usually has a LED tip that lights up at the end.

Cartomizer

The Cartomizer is the cartridge that holds the e liquid and also has an atomizer coil built in. When electronic cigarettes were first made they were composed of three main parts which where the battery atomizer and the cartridge. The appearance of the Cartomizer simplified this down to just the battery and the Cartomizer.

Cartridge

As explained above earlier models of the electronic cigarette was made up of 3 pieces. Some people however still use the word cartridge instead of Cartomizer to avoid any unnecessary confusion.

E Liquid

E liquid is the liquid that is used in the Cartomizer. It usually has 3 key components:

1. An agent that produces vapor (PG or VG)

2. Nicotine

3. Flavourings

E Cig

An electronic cigarette. That was nice and simple.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

One of the agents used in e liquid that creates the vapour. PG is the commonly used base liquid as it is clear, flavourless and therefore mixes well with other flavours.

Vaper

This term relates to an individual that uses an electronic cigarette. Since there is no smoke from e cigs as nothing is burning the e cig creates vapour…and thus the word vaper was born.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

This is another agent used in e liquid that again creates vapour. VG is sweeter than PG and usually produces a thicker longer lingering vapour.

Say What?

Don’t you hate it when you go online to try and sort some help from your fellow vaping cohorts and even though you can see they are talking in English they may as well be speaking Swahili.

Dave: Hey I am off the analog and got myself a new PV

Sarah: Well done, what strength Nic you using?

Dave: 24mg. Love the TH just wish the mAh would last longer

Sarah: You should totally try a PT

If the above convo looks all too familiar to you, don’t panic, below are the main abbreviations used by vapours:

Vaping Abbreviations

Analog: A regular cigarette

Atty: Atomizer

Batt: Battery

Cart: Cartridge

CuttOff: How long the battery will activate the atomizer before turning off

Dripping: Vaping by the process of adding some drops of e liquid directly into the atomizer as appose to using the cartridge

Draw (or Pull): Sucking on the mouth piece of the e cig to inhale vapour into your mouth

E Cig: Electronic Cigarette

E liquid (E Juice): The liquid you fill up the cartridges with.

Filler: Found inside the cartridge that holds the e liquid

mAh: Battery capacity – basically how long the battery will last from charge to charge.

Mod: A homemade e cig device or a modification of existing device that improves its function.

Nic: Nicotine

NRT: Nicotine Replacement Therapy

PPC: Portable charging case

PG: Propylene Glycol

PT: PassThrough – A USB cable that plugs into a computer, charging the e cig whilst the user vapes.

PV: Personal Vaporizer, aka electronic cigarette

TH: Throat Hit – the feeling at the back of your throat whilst vaping

Top Up: Adding more drops of e liquid to the current cartridge

Vape / Vaping: Using a electronic cigarette

VG: Vegetable Glycerin

So there you have it, hopefully next time you get a little confused when checking out a forum or a blog post you can drop by here and look up the words/abbreviations that where troubling you. If there is any that I have missed off or if there are any you would like to know please tell us and we will add them to the list.

Share or like if you have learnt something from this article or if you feel it would be a help to fellow vapers.

Last month I came across the worst anti smoking ad whilst browsing the net that was so bad it inspired me to write an article featuring some of the most creative anti smoking ads that have ever been created. Seriously if you haven’t already seen it then check it out here, trust me this will be no wasted click and if you are a smoker who knows maybe one of these might trigger something deep inside of you and help you to quit.

So today I thought I would write a part deux to the original but this time featuring the best video ads. Some would argue that video is a much more powerful media type than its static counterpart as it can invoke a whole series of emotions through the use of imagery and sound. Below I have compiled my top 6 anti smoking video ads which I believe are great at conveying the anti-smoking message :

Video 1 – Childen Smoking

This video produced by Ogilvy Thailand for the Thai Health Promotion is perhaps my favourite of the bunch. Who’s ever brain child this was seriously deserves a medal as I honestly think this ad is brilliant in its simplicity. By informing the children of the negative effects of smoking they subconsciously remind themselves of the dangers they are doing to themselves.

Video 2 – Lost Parent

[Warning] Get the hankies out now, you will need them!!!!

Let’s be honest nobody has quite perfected the art of using cheap and manipulative tricks in order to turn us into crying babies than commercial directors. I am sure you have all seen the adverts where they bring in what must be the cutest dog known to man, take away its favourite toy to bring out the puppy dog eyes and then film it. Awww look at the sad little doggy. Now send a donation!!! It’s the oldest trick in the book but it works. This anti smoking video has used this technique to perfection, I don’t care who you are if this doesn’t make you choke up then you must have a heart of stone.

Video 3 – The Dangers Of Smoking

If you’re not a fan of gore or anything of a graphical nature then I suggest you don’t play the next clip. What I like about this ad is there are no hidden subliminal messages or play on words, it gets straight to the point and really doesn’t mess around when delivering the anti smoking message. Smoking damages your body…FACT!!!!

Video 4 – Invisible Killer

What we don’t see can’t hurt us…right? Erm, wrong!!! Smoking as we all know doesn’t just harm the smoker but also people in the vicinity of the smoke. This ad brilliantly illustrates this by showing the room full of smoke on one sweep of the room and then again once the smoker looks showing the room completely smoke free. Sometimes because the smoke is not always easily visible it is easy for a smoker to forget about the effects smoking has on others around them. Smoking doesn’t make you a bad parent, smoking near your children does.

Video 5 – Save a Life

First of all it is not cool to draw on your friends car window no matter if you have had an epiphany or not. However what is cool is the fact the woman in this advert upon seeing the anti-smoking billboard about the dangers of smoking and being pregnant decided to quit smoking. Again like many other smoking adverts this one reminds the smoker that their actions can have deadly consequences on others, in this case their unborn innocent child.

Video 6 – Tumour Mutation

The last video in my collection launched by the Department of Health sets the scene with a very miserable looking bleak day which features a man smoking a cigarette outside in his back yard. This may not sound very special but by using graphic imagery this anti smoking advert shows smokers the damage that they are doing to their bodies on the inside. Upon the man’s first drag a tumour forms on the inside of the cigarette and with every subsequent drag the tumour increases in size. I don’t know about you but If I was a smoker this would make me think twice.

Smoking kills around 100,000 people in the UK each year. If you want to help those that are hooked on smoking please share this article - the more people who see these, the more people we can help.

New Electronic Cigarette Study:

There have been previous studies into the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes and their ability to act as a smoking cessation but they always lacked a key component, they have never addressed the users themselves. Finally we actually have a study that incorporates vapers and their experiences with using the e-cig.

It would only seem logical to find out how effective a device is and why it works by asking the people who use it wouldn’t it? Surely this is not rocket science, yet when it comes to electronic cigarettes vapers have constantly been ignored. Until now….

A recent study has addressed the vaping community which has resulted in the following five reasons that vaping works. It is one of the first to actually highlight what many other people including a lot of scientists seem to have overlooked in the past – that nicotine dependence is only a small piece of the large complex puzzle of smoking.

Psychological Characteristics Of Vaping:

Perhaps the focal reason why electronic cigarettes are so effective is because they are very similar to cigarettes. Humans are creatures of habit and as such we find comfort in regularity. We as a society have been conditioned to fear the unknown which impedes on our ability or willingness to change. An electronic cigarette seamlessly allows a smoker to easily transverse from one method of acquiring nicotine to another. Smokers use the device in exactly the same fashion and even experience the sensation at the back of the throat when they inhale. One vaper in the study said:

“That feeling when it comes down and hits your throat and you inhale it – that’s like a big deal for us all.”

Social Aspects:

You only have to look online to see how big the vaping community is. There are literally thousands of people online talking about different electronic cigarettes they have tried, mods they have used or e liquid flavours.

People love to be part of something and the electronic cigarette combined with its vaping community capitalises on this. We only have to look at the 2nd most visited site in the world, Facebook, to see just how big a part social plays on our daily lives.

Unlike other smoking cessations, the vaping community provides a support network to those who are new to vaping. When have you ever heard two people using nicotine patches talking about them and what brand their using?

“Hi John, is that a new nicotine patch you have got on there?”

“Yeah, this one is circular one I am trying out…thought I’d be a little adventurous”

Hobby Aspects:

Again unlike their unsocial counterparts, electronic cigarettes can be used as part of a hobby. There are countless e liquid flavours to try and the ability to custom create your own flavours opens up a DIY e liquid world full of unique and interesting possibilities. Smokers who would once collect lighters are now collecting different devices, juices and mods.

Personal Identity:

Instead of being labelled smokers, making the move to electronic cigarettes allows the users of e cigs to redefine their identity (Vaper).

Quitting Smoking Vs Quitting Nicotine:

Although some people wanted to quit smoking they didn’t necessarily want to quit nicotine. One vaper in the survey stated:

“My goal is to be nicotine-free at some point, but I’m not in a hurry.”

The main goal for a lot of people surveyed seemed to indicate that they their main priority was to find an safer alternative form of nicotine usage as oppose to actually quitting nicotine entirely, at least on a short term basis anyway. The problem with NRT is that they were solely designed to be temporary.

Do Electronic Cigarettes Have Their Place In Rock?

“But all I need are cigarettes and alcohol!
You could wait for a lifetime
To spend your days in the sunshine
You might as well do the white line”

…

The famous lyrics to the 1994 Oasis hit ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’ sums up a rock and roll stars existence quite nicely. The lifestyle ultimately resulted in rock starts treating their bodies like human chemistry sets and drinking excessively until they finally passed out on some random street pavement or on the floor of some hotel room party. How the times have changed…

Modern stars are now more health conscious and as seen by a previous post ‘Celebrity Vaping’ with more and more celebs turning to the electronic cigarette. There are some however who refuse to let the notorious rock image die, with Oasis front man, Noel Gallagher, having a jibe at the Muse drummer, Dom Howard, for using an electronic cigarette.

“I saw the drummer from Muse smoking an electronic cigarette. A cigarette with a battery in. I had to say to him: ‘Really? Really? Is that where you are at? Do me a favour, mate, either have a proper one outside, or don’t have one.’ It lit up green when he had a drag of it. Nonsense. He said that immortal line – ‘Oh you know how it is, mate’. And I said ‘I’m sorry, mate, I actually don’t.’”

However Muse have hit back by saying that Dom was taking the lyrics to Oasis track ‘Live Forever’ literally. In the song the words ‘I want to live I don’t want to die’, ‘maybe I just want to breath’ and ‘you and I are gonna live forever’ can be heard. Noel, accused of taking a U-turn however states that these lyrics were in fact wrote in response to a song called “I Hate Myself and Want to Die” by Nirvana with him saying “kids don’t need to be hearing that nonsense”.

Personally I am a massive fan of rock bands such as Guns and Roses, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and AC DC and I accept that their excessive lifestyles contributed heavily to who they where, what they stood for and ultimately to the songs they wrote.

However I feel that rock has evolved since then and society no longer has a place for the stereotypical rock bands of yesterday. Gone are the days where a group of teenagers living on the outskirts of society formed to become some of the best musical talents of all time. We now have an influx of manufactured bands from TV programmes such as ‘Pop Idol’ or The Voice’ of whom the majority of people have attended higher education, have degrees and have a high standard of living. The best songs are wrote from personal experiences and going to school, getting a job at the bank and playing COD on the PS3 wouldn’t quite cut it. Although with songs like ‘The Cheeky Song’ by the Cheeky Girls and Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ reaching number one in recent years maybe I will be proved wrong.

Do you think the definition and what it means to be a rock star is evolving or are we starting to see the death of a bygone era? Do e-cigs have a rightful place in rock and roll?

Share: If you think electronic cigarettes don’t have their place in rock
Like: If electronic cigarettes do have their place in rock

Whist browsing the internet at the weekend I came across what might possibly be the worst anti-smoking advert ever created…EVER!!! Now I know that what I just said seems like quite a bold statement to make but I am sure you will agree. Seriously, I challenge any of you reading this to look at the advert below and not laugh. If anything this advert makes me want to start smoking, it really is that bad.

For what looks like a bad valentines day poster designed by an infant using Microsoft Paint this surely would be better placed on some mother’s fridge door with the rest of the stickmen and other crayon drawings.

Lucky for the smokers of the world there are some very talented people out there who have come up with the following amazing anti-smoking posters.

Which ones do you feel are the most powerful? If you was/are a smoker, would any of these encourage you to stop smoking?

E Cig Making its Way Onto The Silver Screen

I was flicking through the TV guide the other night after catching up on the latest Coronation Street episode, I know… please don’t judge me, when I found that I had landed on the movies page. The night was young and after flicking through streams and streams of pages I decided to stick a film on. You know when you’re in that mood to watch a film but are really picky about what you actually want to watch? Well that was how I was feeling. I made myself a drink, grabbed a packet of Asda’s finest ‘smart price’ sweets out of the cupboard and got myself comfy on my couch. After reading through the movie synopses of multiple films I decided to watch the Tourist. Now if you can imagine a film that combines two of the hottest commodities in Hollywood combined with it being a dark, French- thriller and well you have the making of the Tourist. For what ultimately sounds like a fantastic plot on paper, the execution of the movie leaves little to be desired. It is a sort of romantic, comedic and mysterious hybrid that to be honest was quite confusing at times as I wasn’t sure what type of reaction the film was trying to evoke.

Anyway this isn’t a film review and to cut a long story short the reason I mentioned it was because as I was watching the movie I noticed Johnny Depp using an e cig during a scene whilst travelling on a train. Jonny Deep is renowned for smoking cigarettes in many of his other films which made me think why he chose to convert to the electronic cigarette in this one. Could he be using the smokeless device for the very simple reason that he has started to value his health or was this a marketing ploy by a clever e cig company in getting this Hollywood hunk to promote their product to a large audience through film?

Celebrity Vapors

Johnny Depp however isn’t the only celebrity to jump on board and join the ever growing vaping community, there have been many ‘A listers’ that have been spotted making the switch in the last few years. Here we can see a few of them:

Leonardo DiCaprio

The Inception and Titanic star was first spotted whilst out riding his bike in arguably the world’s most famous city, New York, using an electronic cigarette. Since then he is regularly seen vaping away during film sets

Charlie Sheen

I am sure you have all heard of the name Charlie Sheen. Probably most known for his role in the sitcom Two and a Half Men, the world’s most expensive TV actor has launched his own e cigarette company called NicoSheen.

Ronnie Wood

Rolling Stones guitarist, Ronnie Wood, was notorious for his and his fellow band mates love for the excess. The very fact that he has been seen sporting an e cig clearly shows that they are no novelty item.

Britney Spears

This teen beauty shot straight to stardom at a young age, however the early fame took its toll and in recent years she has been the centre of mass media attention. From wild nights out with partying companion Paris Hilton to shaving off her hair, Miss Spears had been providing the media with ample ammunition – however in 2008 her parenting skills came under fire as pictures emerged showing the mum of two smoking in front of her son as he played with the cigarette packet. Fast-forward a few years and Britney seems to have learnt her lesson as she can now be seen using an electric cigarette to satisfy her nicotine craving.

Lindsay Lohan

Another one of life’s extremists when it comes to the partying scene, Lindsay Lohan reportedly made the switch to e cigs after her father become concerned with her health due to her extreme smoking habit.

So Why Make The Change?

There are multiple reasons celebs have decided to ditch the once cool white little stick for its electronic replacement. Here are a few:

• Health / Looks:

For people who are photographed on a daily basis e cigs allow celebs to ‘smoke’ the healthy way whilst maintaining their youthful and healthy appearance.

• Environment:

There are many celebrities who are now in support of being ‘green’. Using e cigs only legitimises their claim. By heating the nicotine e liquid the e cig converts the liquid to a vapor that the user inhales.

• Convenience:

Electronic cigarettes can be used almost anywhere from clubs to restaurants and movie sets unlike their unhealthy alternative.

• They’re Cool:

Celebrities are famous for keeping up with the current trends – it would be un-cool of them not to be using one!!

The emergency exits on this flight can be located….

Please make sure you are fully understand our safety procedures and turn off all electric devices during takeoff. Oh and on a final note, please refrain from using your electronic cigarette on this aircraft for the full duration of this flight. Thank you for your co-operation and please sit back and enjoy the ride.

Can I Smoke On A Plane

Sorry did I hear that right? “please refrain from using your electronic cigarette on this aircraft for the full duration of this flight”. Although the above flight message was made up, don’t expect it to be too long before this message is heard on an increasing number of flights around the world.

Electronic Cigarettes are marketed as being able to be used anywhere, even in places that impose the smoking ban so how come the majority of American Airlines have, or are in the process of altering their flight policies and adding e cigs to the list of prohibited items?

Back in February 2011 the Associated Press reported that the Department of Transportation (DOT) said “the use of smokeless electronic cigarettes is prohibited and plans to issue an official ban.” However when the Business Insider asked DOT if this particular ban was ever issued they were told to get in contact with the FAA regarding the situation. Following on from this they contacted the FAA to be told “Currently, U.S. air carriers do not allow them since they contradict the no smoking ban as well as produce a propylene glycol emission when smoked.”

The majority of US airlines agree that there seems to be no danger in the devices themselves being used on the aircraft however the misconception surrounding them would cause unnecessary trouble. Also the vapour produced by these would be a nuisance to other passengers.

On American flights, the e cig seems to have been well and truly grounded. So if you are a smoker or someone in the process of quitting using e liquid than it looks like nicotine patches and gum are your best way to get your fix whilst a mile up in the sky.

However here in the UK it seems that the use of these devices is still legal with some airlines even selling them. That said if you wish to use an electronic cigarette then a little understanding and respect for others wouldn’t go a miss, use the following tips to make sure you don’t run into any trouble:

1. Inform the Cabin Crew

To avoid any confusion you should inform the cabin crew that you have an electronic cigarette. A good tip is to try and not use words such as ‘Electronic Cigarette’ or ‘E Cig’ as this may alarm them, instead use the term Vapestick of nicotine inhaler. Also by purchasing an e cig that has a bright coloured light on the end (preferably not yellow or orange) will help your cause as this clearly differentiates the electronic version from a regular cigarette.

2. Use the Rest Room (If allowed on flight)

Why not take a little 5 minute trip to the restroom, out of the view of fellow passengers. There would be no concern about triggering any alarms as no smoke is released and the vapour mist produced dissipates within a matter of seconds leaving no trace.

3. Be Polite

If you want to vape in your seat then you should out of politeness ask your fellow passengers sitting next to you if they mind you using your electronic cigarette. Politely explain what an e cig is and ask if they mind you using it –if you explain to them that only vapour is released, more than likely they will be understanding.

Before booking a flight make sure you fully understand the airlines policies regarding electronic cigarettes. Some airlines allow them to be packed in your travel bag but not used whilst others don’t allow them at all – this will insure you don’t run into any trouble and have a nice and enjoyable flight.

Please Share/Like using the buttons on the right if:
