Many smokers hope to quit their habit by transitioning to electronic cigarettes. If you are one of them then you are probably becoming confused! There is a mind boggling array of e-cigs, cartomizers and e-liquids to choose from. Then there is the nicotine content of the eliquids to consider.
Leaving cigarettes behind is a daunting prospect. The fear of those awful withdrawal symptoms makes the stronger e-liquids a tempting proposition. However, the strongest e-liquids may not be the right choice. Vaping with an eliquid that is too strong might leave you feeling lightheaded and will detract from the pleasure of vaping. Choosing an eliquid that is too mild may mean that your cravings are not entirely satisfied. Your choice of eliquid must meet your expectations or you will be at risk of returning to smoking.
How Do You Smoke?
E-liquids are available in a variety of strengths from 0mg to 36mg. This number indicates the amount of nicotine per millilitre of liquid. The correct strength for you will depend on the nature of your smoking habit. Not just how often you smoke but the type of cigarettes that you are used to. It may take a little trial and error to find the perfect strength of e liquid but here is our guide to help you make a sensible choice.
0mg Nicotine e-liquids are the best choice if you have never smoked or have already quit but still have an oral fixation.
5mg or 6mg Nicotine e-liquids will suit if you are an occasional smoker of lite cigarettes. This level of nicotine is also the final step in the process of eliminating nicotine if you are already a vaper.
11mg or 12mg Nicotine e-liquids are a good choice if you are a regular to heavy smoker of lite to moderate cigarettes. This strength of e-liquid will deliver a great throat hit and will satisfy your craving. Stronger eliquids may cause dizziness and headaches.
16mg or 18mg Nicotine e-liquids represent the middle ground. These are a good choice if you smoke regular cigarettes and up to one pack per day.
24mg Nicotine e-liquids will satisfy your craving and should not be too powerful if you are a very heavy smoker or if you prefer strong or unfiltered cigarettes.
36mg Nicotine e-liquids offer the highest concentration of nicotine and will prove to be too strong unless you are a very heavy smoker with a serious addiction.
Please note that new legislation which comes into force 20 May 2016 will restrict the strength of e-liquids to a maximum of 20mg.
Trial and Error
The truth is that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to e-liquids. The perfect choice may depend on the way that you vape and the type of electronic cigarette that you use rather than just the nature of your smoking habit.
If you experience dizziness, headaches or feelings of nausea when you vape then don’t jump to the conclusion that vaping isn’t for you. These are simply symptoms that you may experience if your eliquid is too strong. On the other hand, if you find that vaping is not satisfying your cravings, even when you vape more frequently, then you may need to choose a stronger e-liquid. If you do change strengths then move up or down one level at a time.
You could also find that you require a variety of strengths for different situations. Perhaps a lower strength eliquid will work well for you in the morning whilst you prefer a higher strength for vaping after a meal.
By adjusting the frequency of your vaping and the strength of your e-liquid you will discover the perfect balance!
