RDA/RTA Accessories FAQs

What Supplies Do I Need for Coil Building?

To get started with your RTA or RDA rebuildable atomizer, you’ll need a few tools – and we’ll discuss those in a moment. The two primary supplies that you’ll need to restock constantly, though, are wicking material and wire. Vape cotton is the most popular wicking material for your RDA or RTA rebuildable tank. It’s an effective and reliable transporter of e-liquid, and it produces a pure flavour that most vapers enjoy.

You’ll also need plenty of vape wire when you build your own coils. The two most popular wire types for coil building are kanthal and stainless steel; both of those materials are extremely long lasting and resistant to heat. Their electrical resistance also remains stable over time, which helps them withstand the rigours of long-term use.

What Do You Get with a Coil Building Kit?

You’ll always do the best possible work if you have the right tools for that job, and that’s what you’ll get with a vape coil building kit. Building vape coils from scratch requires a lot of effort – and if a coil doesn’t turn out perfectly, you’re not going to have a good vaping experience. That’s a lot of wasted time. A vape coil building kit helps you build perfect coils faster and with less work. These are some of the items that you’ll get in a typical coil building kit.

  • A coiling jig wraps your wire into a perfect spiral, which eliminates wasted wire and helps you avoid hot spots that can lead to burned wicks and unpleasant flavours.
  • Scissors and wire cutters allow you to trim your wire and cotton easily, which is especially helpful when you’re working with an RDA or RTA that has a smaller build deck.
  • Ceramic tweezers allow you to adjust your coil after you’ve mounted it on your atomizer. After mounting the coil, you’ll test fire it to check for and eliminate hot spots. Using ceramic tweezers for this job ensures that you won’t burn your hands and helps to prevent you from inadvertently causing a short circuit.
  • Screwdrivers ensure that you always have the right tools on hand to tighten down the mounting screws of any RDA or RTA.
  • A building platform gives you a stable surface on which to mount your RDA or RTA while building a coil. It also gives you an easy way to test your coil’s resistance and check for a short circuit before connecting the RDA or RTA to your vaping device.

What Are the Best RDA and RTA Coils?

The ideal coil for your RDA or RTA is anything that meets your requirements for flavour and vapour production while operating within a power range that your vape mod can safely deliver. If you’ve had trouble building a coil that satisfies your needs, we suggest taking a look at our selection of pre-built coils. Pre-built coils are ready for mounting in your rebuildable atomizer right out of the package; just insert the leads into the mounting posts of your RDA or RTA and trim the excess wire, and you’re ready to go.

Pre-built RDA coils are significantly less expensive than coils for a sub-ohm tank, and they use all of the elaborate twisted and braided wires that you’ve been dying to try. From alien and juggernaut coils to stapled and fused Clapton coils, you’ll find all of the cloud chasing coil designs that you could ever want.

How Long Do RDA and RTA Coils Last?

An RDA or RTA coil can last anywhere from a day or two to multiple weeks without requiring cleaning or replacement depending on the type of e-liquid that you use. The main factor affecting how long your coils last is whether or not the e-liquid you use is sweetened with sucralose. Sucralose forms a residue on your coil that caramelises and turns dark, lending an unpleasant flavour to the vapour. When the residue becomes so thick that every puff tastes burnt, you’ll want to either clean or replace the coil. Use unsweetened e-liquid to make your coils last as long as they possibly can.

How Often Should I Change the Cotton in an RDA or RTA?

You should change the cotton in your RDA or RTA every time you clean or replace the coil. After you’ve used a coil for a while, you’ll notice that the surface of the metal has begun to darken. When that happens, the cotton will darken as well. As mentioned above, how quickly that happens will depend on the type of e-liquid you’re using. If your e-liquid is sweetened, your coils may last only a day or two each – and when a coil’s time is up, you need to make a decision.

You can remove the residue from the coil – with a toothbrush under running water, for instance – or you can build an entirely new coil. Building a new coil is the quickest way to restore the pure flavour that you love, but many people try to save a little money by cleaning their coils a few times before replacing them. Either way, when the cotton in your RDA or RTA begins to darken, it’s time to replace it.
