A pub is private property that is open to the public under the conditions set by its owner or operator. The business can prohibit vaping inside, outside or throughout the entire premises. Customers are expected to follow that policy as a condition of remaining in the venue.

Can You Vape in a Pub in the UK?

Pub policies are the practical deciding factor across the UK, although the legal framework and future regulations can differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

You are most likely to encounter one of three policies:

Do Most Pubs Allow Vaping Indoors?

No. Although there are independent pubs that permit discreet vaping, most customers should expect indoor vaping to be prohibited unless the venue clearly says otherwise.

Large operators commonly apply one policy across many locations. Independent and leased pubs may give the individual manager more freedom, which is why two pubs owned by or associated with the same wider company can sometimes operate different rules.

Look for:

• No-smoking and no-vaping signs near the entrance
• Information on the pub’s website or booking page
• Notices in the beer garden or smoking area
• Instructions displayed behind the bar
• Guidance from a member of staff

If there is no sign, ask. Silence is not permission, and producing a cloud over someone’s Sunday roast is unlikely to improve the discussion.

Can You Vape in Wetherspoons?

Wetherspoon does not permit electronic cigarettes or vaporisers outside the designated smoking areas on its premises. Its policy also applies to hotel rooms and external areas that are not designated for smoking.

If the outdoor section is busy, move to the designated smoking area where possible. Small adjustments such as using a lower-powered device and avoiding very large clouds can reduce disturbance—but they do not override the venue’s rules.

Why Do Pubs Ban Vaping?

Pub operators introduce vape-free policies for several practical reasons. The decision does not necessarily mean that the business considers vaping identical to smoking.

Can You Stealth Vape in a Pub?

You should not. Producing less visible vapour does not make the activity permitted, and attempting to hide what you are doing can turn a simple misunderstanding into a deliberate breach of the pub’s rules.

Vaping can still be noticed through:

• The light on the device
• The smell of the e-liquid
• Vapour released when you exhale
• CCTV
• Customers sitting nearby
• Repeated trips to a toilet or quiet corner

If you would not be comfortable using the vape openly after asking a staff member, do not use it there.

Can You Vape in Pub Toilets?

No, unless the venue has somehow created the country’s least appealing designated vaping area and clearly told you so—which it has not.

Toilets remain part of the pub premises and are covered by its no-vaping policy. Vaping there may trigger alarms, concern other customers and result in you being asked to leave.

Wait until you can use the designated outdoor area.

Can You Charge a Vape in a Pub?

Do not plug a vape into a pub socket without permission. Electrical outlets are provided at the venue’s discretion, and staff may prohibit customers from charging personal battery-powered devices.

Charging a vape unattended, using a damaged cable or leaving it connected beside drinks creates unnecessary risks. Charge the device before going out and carry it in a protective case.

Never use a battery with a torn wrap, damaged casing, unusual heat or visible swelling.

What Happens If You Vape in a Pub That Prohibits It?

The response depends on the venue and how you react when approached. Staff may:

• Ask you to stop vaping
• Direct you to the smoking area
• Refuse further service
• Ask you to leave
• Refuse future entry in serious or repeated cases

The fact that indoor vaping is not automatically a criminal offence does not prevent a private business from removing someone who refuses to follow its rules.

The same principle applies: the venue sets the policy unless a specific legal restriction applies. Most indoor bars, clubs and music venues prohibit vaping and treat it in the same way as smoking.

Nightclubs are particularly unlikely to allow it because:

• Heavy vapour may be confused with smoke or stage effects
• Customers are standing close together
• Some venues do not permit re-entry after you leave

Ask whether there is a smoking terrace or controlled outdoor area before leaving the building. Walking outside may end your admission at venues with no re-entry.

Can You Vape in Restaurants and Cafés?

Most restaurants and cafés prohibit indoor vaping, even though the legal position is not identical to cigarette smoking. Businesses commonly want dining spaces to remain free from visible vapour and strong e-liquid aromas.

Outdoor tables may be treated differently, but check before vaping—especially where tables are close together or the terrace is used primarily for food service.

Can You Vape in a Cinema?

No. Major cinema chains prohibit vaping inside their buildings, including screens, foyers, toilets and other customer areas.

Cineworld’s current terms state that customers are not permitted to smoke or vape anywhere on its cinema premises. The rule includes electronic cigarettes and other artificial smoking devices, and customers who breach it may be required to leave without receiving a refund.

The dark auditorium does not make discreet vaping acceptable. Vapour can distract other viewers, and the device’s light may be surprisingly visible during a film.

Can You Leave the Cinema to Vape?

That depends on the cinema. Some venues may allow ticket holders to leave temporarily and return, while others may restrict re-entry or require you to speak to staff first.

Do not walk through an exit door and assume that your digital ticket will admit you again. Ask an employee before leaving, particularly during a late screening when the main entrance may be locked.

What Can You Use When Vaping Is Not Permitted?

Adults who already use nicotine can plan ahead for a long meal, film or evening out.

Options include:

• Vaping before entering the venue in a permitted outdoor area
• Using the pub’s designated smoking area
• Choosing a lower-maintenance refillable device that can be switched off securely
• Waiting until you leave the venue
• Considering smoke-free nicotine pouches, where permitted and appropriate

Nicotine pouches should still be used discreetly and disposed of properly. They are intended only for adults who already use nicotine and should be kept away from children and pets.

• Ask staff before using your device.
