E-Liquid FAQs

What Is E-Liquid?

E-liquid – also known as vapour liquid or vape juice – is the main consumable product that you use when vaping. It's responsible for creating the flavours that you taste, and it also supplies nicotine to your body through your lungs. When you exhale the vapour, your e-liquid creates the visible clouds that make vaping look and feel similar to smoking.

The ingredients of e-liquid are typically propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, food-grade flavours and nicotine. However, you may occasionally find e-liquids made without some of those ingredients to satisfy various demands. Some people, for example, prefer to use nicotine-free e-liquid.

What Nicotine Strength Should You Use?

Choosing from all of the different nicotine strengths that are available isn’t easy if you’re new to vaping and are buying vape juice for the first time. That’s because different vaping devices work best with different ranges of nicotine strengths. Your personal nicotine requirements come into play here as well.

You can group e-liquid nicotine strengths loosely into two groups: low nicotine (0-6 mg/ml) and high nicotine (higher than 6 mg/ml). Vape kits designed for the direct-to-lung inhaling style will generally work best with lower-strength e-liquids, and starter kits designed for mouth-to-lung inhaling will work best with higher-strength e-liquids.

To ensure that you’ll always buy vape juice with the correct nicotine strength for your needs, start by looking at the physical characteristics of your vaping device. After that, all you need to do is listen to what your body tells you as you vape.

Choosing the Right Nicotine Strength for Your Vaping Device

You can always tell whether a vaping device will work best with higher- or lower-nicotine e-liquid by looking at the device’s mouthpiece. Is the mouthpiece narrow like a cigarette filter? The device will probably work best with higher-nicotine e-liquid. If the mouthpiece is wider than a cigarette filter, the device will probably work best with lower-nicotine e-liquid. There’s no need to worry that you’ll find the experience of using a lower-nicotine e-liquid unsatisfying. If you’re using a device designed to produce very large vapour clouds, you’re going to absorb plenty of nicotine thanks to the large volume of e-liquid you’ll be inhaling with each puff.

Paying Attention to Your Body

Buying e-liquid with a nicotine strength that’s in the correct range for your vaping hardware is only one part of the equation. The other part is listening to what your body tells you as you vape. Are you having trouble getting rid of your cigarette cravings regardless of how much you vape? Your nicotine strength is probably too low. Do you feel jittery or experience an overwhelming level of throat hit when vaping? Your nicotine strength is probably too high.

What Are VG and PG Ratios?

The VG/PG ratio of an e-liquid expresses what percentage of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol the e-liquid contains as a base. The VG/PG ratio doesn’t include the e-liquid’s other ingredients. For example, a 50/50 e-liquid contains a base consisting of half VG and half PG along with nicotine and flavourings. A VG/PG ratio of 50/50 is, in fact, ideal for most types of vaping equipment and will allow you to enjoy many of the benefits of both VG and PG. Some people, however, prefer e-liquid with a VG/PG ratio skewed in favour of either VG or PG. The two liquids both have certain benefits that they contribute to a vape juice.

What Is Propylene Glycol (PG)?

Propylene glycol is one of the world’s most useful chemicals. It’s an emulsifier that keeps the ingredients in a solution mixed. Because it attracts and retains moisture, it can help to prevent a product from drying out. Propylene glycol is also antimicrobial, so it helps to keep products from spoiling. Some of the products that commonly include propylene glycol include moisturizers and lotions, medications, deodorants, shampoos and cosmetics. Propylene glycol is also used in the fluid for commercial smoke machines, which might be the reason why it has been used as the primary component of e-liquid since the days of the first e-cigarettes.

In terms of how they perform in an e-liquid, the primary differences between propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine are that propylene glycol is thinner and generates a slightly scratchier sensation in the throat when it’s inhaled. With that in mind, you can expect a high-PG e-liquid to produce smaller vapour clouds and to give you a stronger throat hit. The smallest vaping devices work best with high-PG e-liquids because a device with a very small atomizer coil needs a thin vape juice in order to work reliably.

What Is Vegetable Glycerine (VG)?

Vegetable glycerine is a product resulting from the creation of soap. The chemical reaction that takes place in soap creation is called saponification, and it happens when lye is mixed with oil. The reaction transforms the oil into soap and glycerine. Since people need lots of soap, there’s also plenty of glycerine to go around – and like propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine has a number of interesting uses. Like PG, VG is also an excellent absorber of moisture. It tastes slightly sweet, so it’s used as a preservative and as a sweetener in shelf-stable foods and snacks. It’s also extremely common for VG to be added to lotions, cosmetics and soaps as a moisturising agent.

VG tastes slightly sweet, whereas PG is almost flavourless. For that reason, VG can enhance an e-liquid with a sweet flavour profile. VG is also significantly thicker than PG, and that thickness allows high-VG e-liquids to produce very large vapour clouds. The final major difference between VG and PG is that VG is a bit smoother when it’s inhaled. If you prefer a mild vaping experience that’s low in throat hit, you’ll want to choose a vape juice that’s higher in VG. Because high-VG e-liquids are very thick, they work best with bigger vaping devices that have very large wick openings for their atomizer coils.

What Are the Different Types of E-Liquid?

There are two types of e-liquid, and the two types are classified according to the kind of nicotine that they use. Most of the vape juice on the market uses freebase nicotine. More recently, though, another type called nicotine salt e-liquid has been developed and has increased rapidly in popularity.

The biggest difference between freebase nicotine vape juice and nic salt e-liquid is in the nicotine strengths of both types of e-liquids. While it is possible for any type of e-liquid to have any nicotine strength, the most common strengths for freebase nicotine e-liquid are 3 mg/ml and 6 mg/ml. Nic salts, on the other hand, usually come in nicotine strengths between 10-20 mg/ml. Given the wide variance in nicotine strengths, it’s obviously very important to choose the right type of e-liquid for your needs and for your vaping equipment.

Who Should Buy Freebase E-Liquid?

If you’re buying e-liquid to use in a vape mod or other device designed for direct-to-lung inhaling, you should buy freebase nicotine vape juice. We suggest starting with the 3 mg/ml nicotine strength and increasing the strength only if you’re completely certain that you aren’t getting enough nicotine. Today’s direct-to-lung vaping devices produce so much vapour that, for most people, the higher 6 mg/ml nicotine strength would be overpowering and unpleasant.

You can also find freebase nicotine e-liquid in nicotine strengths higher than 6 mg/ml, although those nicotine strengths aren’t as common as they used to be because nicotine salt e-liquid has become the most popular choice among those who use higher-nicotine e-liquids.

Who Should Buy Nicotine Salts?

If you’re buying e-liquid to use in a small vape starter kit designed for mouth-to-lung inhaling – such as a pod system – you should buy nicotine salt vape juice. When you shop for nic salts, you’ll find that the products are usually available in two strengths: a lower strength around 10 mg/ml and a higher strength of up to 20 mg/ml. If you’re new to vaping and are buying e-liquid for the first time, we suggest trying the higher strength first because it’ll give you an assertive throat hit reminiscent of smoking a cigarette.

Pod-based vaping devices are incredibly popular within the vaping community, and manufacturers of vaping hardware have made consistent improvements to their pod-based offerings over the years. These days, you can find pod systems that produce much more vapour per puff than a cigarette produces smoke. If you buy such a device, you may find the 20 mg/ml nicotine strength a bit too strong for your needs. In that case, you should consider stepping down to the 10 mg/ml strength.

What Are the Best E-Liquid Flavours to Buy?

If you’re still a smoker and haven’t make the switch to vaping yet, you probably think that you enjoy the flavour of tobacco. Even the world’s greatest cigarette, however, can never taste like anything other than a cigarette – and that’s one of the most important things separating vaping from smoking. E-liquid can taste like almost anything you can imagine because its flavour comes from the same natural and artificial flavourings used by the makers of foods, beverages, snacks and candies.

There are hundreds of different vape juice flavours in the world today, and it’s impossible to recommend just one for every person because taste is subjective. Many people who vape prefer e-liquids that resemble cigarettes as closely as possible. Those people typically prefer tobacco and menthol e-liquids. These days, though, it’s far more common for people to buy sweeter e-liquids with candy, fruit and dessert flavours. If you’re buying vape juice for the first time, we suggest selecting a small assortment. That way, you’re certain to find a flavour you’ll enjoy and will have a better idea of what you should buy when you shop for e-liquid again.

What Is Shortfill E-Liquid?

All e-liquid sold in the United Kingdom must comply with the restrictions set forth in the Tobacco Products Directive. The TPD is the primary law that regulates the vaping industry in the UK and in the European Union, and it includes two limitations by which all e-liquid makers must abide. The maximum legal nicotine strength for TPD-compliant e-liquids is 20 mg/ml, and the maximum bottle size for any e-liquid containing nicotine is 10 ml.

The bottle size limitation imposed by the TPD isn’t a problem for people who use higher-nicotine e-liquids. For people who use sub-ohm vaping devices, though, it’s not uncommon to use more than 10 ml of vape juice in a single day – and that’s why short fills exist. Shortfill e-liquid is nicotine-free e-liquid sold in larger bottles that aren’t completely full. Flavourless e-liquid with nicotine is sold separately in the form of 10 ml “nic shots.” Since the shortfill e-liquid bottle contains no nicotine, it can be larger without violating the restrictions of the TPD.

To use shortfill e-liquid, you’ll open the bottle and add the nicotine. Use one nicotine shot for a 60 ml shortfill bottle or two nicotine shots for a 120 ml bottle. Close the bottle and shake it well before filling your tank with the e-liquid.
