Does Tobacco E-Liquid Taste Like a Cigarette?
If you’re new to vaping, it is extremely important for you to understand that tobacco flavoured vapes do not taste like combustible cigarettes. That’s not possible because a tobacco vape juice contains no tobacco and does not produce smoke. Without those two elements, there’s no way for a tobacco e-liquid to taste like a cigarette.
With that being said, though, a tobacco e-liquid can still satisfy the palate in the same way that a cigarette does. The flavour purveyors of the world have created some extremely realistic tobacco flavours that strongly resemble the aroma of high-quality cigarette, cigar and pipe tobacco. Vape juice makers use those flavours in various combinations and may also add flavours that impart nutty, spicy, herbal or sweet notes. What Strength of Tobacco E-Liquid Do I Need?
Choosing the right nicotine strength isn’t just about how much nicotine you want. You also need to consider the type of nicotine in the e-liquid and how much vapour your device produces. A small pod kit and a powerful vape mod can deliver very different amounts of e-liquid with each puff, so the same nicotine strength can feel completely different in the two devices.
There are two main types of nicotine e-liquid. Freebase nicotine is the traditional form and is what people often mean when they refer to regular e-liquid. It generally produces a more noticeable throat hit as the nicotine strength increases. Nicotine salts, or nic salts, are formulated to feel smoother at higher nicotine strengths, which is why they are especially popular in compact pod kits and other low-powered devices.
A simple rule to remember:
The more vapour your device produces with each puff, the lower the nicotine strength will normally need to be. A low-powered MTL device produces a relatively small amount of vapour, so it can be paired with a higher-strength e-liquid. A powerful device produces much more vapour and therefore usually requires a much lower nicotine concentration.
For a Stronger, More Cigarette-Like Experience
If you want a tobacco e-liquid to feel as close as possible to smoking, a lower-output vape kit or pod device paired with a higher nicotine strength is usually the best place to start. These devices produce smaller vapour clouds and are commonly used with a mouth-to-lung inhale, which closely resembles the way you draw on a cigarette.
Higher-strength freebase e-liquid can add a pronounced throat hit that works especially well with classic and menthol tobacco flavours, helping to create a firmer, more cigarette-like sensation. Nic salts are smoother at comparable strengths, making them a good alternative if you want strong nicotine delivery without as much throat hit.
For Richer Flavour and Sweeter Tobacco Blends
More powerful devices produce much more vapour with each puff, so they normally require a lower nicotine strength. Freebase e-liquid at around 3 mg/ml is common in high-output setups, with 6 mg/ml better suited to some lower-powered or more restricted devices.
This style of vaping can work particularly well with flavoured tobacco and tobacco dessert e-liquids. The greater vapour production can make secondary notes such as custard, caramel, vanilla, fruit or coffee more prominent, while the lower nicotine strength keeps the throat hit from overwhelming those flavours. If you enjoy tobacco primarily as part of a richer, sweeter flavour profile, a lower-strength liquid and a higher-output device may suit you better.
Not sure where to start? Think about your device first. If it produces a small amount of vapour and has a tight, cigarette-like draw, a higher-strength freebase liquid or a 10–20 mg/ml nic salt is usually the more appropriate type of e-liquid. If it produces large clouds and uses substantially more e-liquid with every puff, choose a much lower nicotine strength. From there, you can adjust the strength according to how satisfying the vape feels to you.
