Science is an amazing thing and the wonders never cease to amaze me - we have sent people to the moon, have computers as small as our hands and can communicate with people all around the world in real time via smartphone apps. However one of the latest scientific findings by a group of researchers in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine may lead to a personalised way to help smokers to quit

The Research

During there research they decided to look at a pill called varenicline and the nicotine patch as these two methods of quitting had shown a good percentage of effectiveness among quitters. Over 4 years they looked at more than 1,200 smokers and test groups who had a variation of a real pill, a placebo and a nicotine patch. The research showed that the people who metabolized nicotine normally did better with the pill and those who had low nicotine metabolism did better with the patch.
