SMOK RIGEL: INSTRUCTION MANUAL AND TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

The SMOK Rigel is the latest in SMOK’s long-running line of powerful, capable and fashionable box mods. It uses a dual-battery configuration to deliver up to 230 watts of power, and it includes the latest member of the famed TFV tank series: the new TFV9. The SMOK Rigel has virtually everything that you could ever want in a vape mod, and if you’ve selected the Rigel as your next vaping device, you’ve chosen wisely.

If the Rigel is your first real vape mod, though, you’re going to find that using a box mod has a bit of a learning curve – and that’s where this SMOK Rigel instruction manual is going to help. When you buy a vaping device as complicated as a box mod, it’s always a good idea to read the printed manual and make sure that you fully understand the ins and outs of the device. We also understand, though, that getting a new vape mod is a pretty big event and that it’s a lot more fun to read the full manual after you’ve gotten your new device up and running. That’s exactly what this guide is going to help you do. We’re going to cover the essentials of using and maintaining the SMOK Rigel, and you’ll have your new device ready to go in minutes instead of hours.

What Coils Work With the SMOK TFV9 Tank?

The naming conventions for SMOK’s tanks have never been easy to understand, so we’ll begin this guide by explaining which coils are compatible with the SMOK TFV9 tank.

At the time of writing, the SMOK TFV9 has one exclusive coil. That is the SMOK V9 coil, which has a resistance of 0.15 ohm and a recommended power range of 40-90 watts. The SMOK V9 coil has a mesh heating surface and is designed for direct-to-lung inhaling. The SMOK Rigel kit includes two V9 coils.

If you want to experiment, the SMOK TFV9 is also compatible with SMOK TFV8 Big Baby coils. Those coils include the following:

  • V8 Baby X4 Coil: Quadruple coil, 0.15 ohm, 30-70 watts.
  • V8 Baby T6 Coil: Sextuple coil, 0.20 ohm, 40-130 watts.
  • V8 Baby Q2 Coil (EU Version): Dual coil, 0.40 ohm, 40-80 watts.
  • V8 Baby T8 Coil (EU Version): Quadruple coil, 0.15 ohm, 50-110 watts.
  • V8 Baby RBA Coil: Rebuildable platform for building your own coils.

How to Use the SMOK Rigel

We’ll begin this guide with a simple set of instructions explaining how to use your new SMOK Rigel kit. We’ll hit the high points in our SMOK Rigel guide by explaining how to charge, fill, use and maintain the device.

How to Charge the SMOK Rigel

The SMOK Rigel requires two 18650 batteries, which aren’t included in the package. If you haven’t purchased the Rigel kit yet, make sure that you add two batteries to your cart before checking out. You should always use matched pairs of batteries with the SMOK Rigel or any dual-battery vaping device.

To install the batteries, turn the SMOK Rigel so the device’s screen faces away from you. The entire back side of the device is a magnetic battery cover. Lift the cover and install the batteries, making sure that the cells’ positive and negative poles face the directions indicated inside the battery compartment. Replace the battery cover.

To charge the SMOK Rigel, connect it to your computer using the included USB-C cable. The SMOK Rigel isn’t compatible with USB power sources that operate at higher than 5 volts, so don’t attempt to charge it with a tablet or smartphone charger. While the SMOK Rigel charges, its screen changes to show the status of the two battery cells. When both batteries are at 100 percent, the charging process is complete.

How to Fill the SMOK TFV9 Tank

The SMOK TFV9 tank has a child-resistant top cap. To open the cap for filling, place your finger and thumb above the SMOK logo at the top of the tank and below the mouthpiece. Lift the cap up and rotate it to the side to expose the tank’s filling port. The filling port is the curved opening next to the tank’s round centre air channel. Place the tip of your e-liquid bottle inside the filling port and squeeze the bottle until the tank is nearly full. Swing the tank’s cap back to its original position and push it down to lock it.

The SMOK TFV9 atomizer coil has a thick cotton wick that keeps the coil supplied with e-liquid. If the wick isn’t completely saturated before you start vaping, it can burn. Before using the SMOK TFV9 tank for the first time – and before using a new atomizer coil – you should always give the coil’s wick several minutes to absorb e-liquid from the tank.

How to Replace the SMOK TFV9 Coil

In the SMOK TFV9 tank, the atomizer coil isn’t just the component that generates vapour; it’s also part of the tank’s central chimney. You should only replace the atomizer coil when the tank is empty because removing the coil will likely cause the tank to dump its contents.

When you start to notice a burned flavour while vaping, it’s time to replace the atomizer coil in your SMOK TFV9 tank. Remove the tank from the SMOK Rigel and unscrew the tank’s bottom cap. The atomizer coil is attached to the tank’s base. Unscrew the coil and discard it. Remove the new coil from its blister pack and put a few drops of e-liquid on all of the coil’s wick openings. Twist the new coil into the tank’s base. Reassemble and fill the tank. Every time you replace the coil, give the wick several minutes to become fully saturated before you resume vaping.

How to Vape With the SMOK Rigel

After you’ve charged the batteries, filled the tank and waited several minutes for the wick to get fully saturated, the SMOK Rigel is ready to use. Press the fire button five times to turn the device on. To vape, hold the fire button while inhaling. Remember that the recommended operational power range for the SMOK V9 atomizer coil is 40-90 watts. We suggest starting at the bottom of that range when the coil is new and increasing the power gradually as the coil breaks in. To adjust the wattage, use the “+” and “-“ buttons.

How to Fix Problems With the SMOK Rigel

The SMOK Rigel mod and TFV9 tank represent the culmination of years of product development and iteration. They’re extremely reliable products, and you’re unlikely to ever encounter a problem with either of them. If you do have a problem with the SMOK Rigel, though, you’ll find the help you need here.

SMOK Rigel Not Charging

If your SMOK Rigel doesn’t charge when you connect it to a USB power source, you should first make sure that you are using a computer or other reliable power supply that isn’t a “quick charger” for a mobile device. Remember that the SMOK Rigel only works with 5-volt power supplies. If the device still isn’t charging, try replacing the USB-C cable. It’s common for USB cables to develop structural weaknesses after they’ve been connected and disconnected repeatedly for some time.

If you’re still unable to charge the SMOK Rigel, the next thing to determine is whether the source of the problem is the device’s charging port or the batteries themselves. You can determine that by installing a new pair of batteries in the SMOK Rigel or by charging the current batteries in an external charger. If the new batteries charge in the SMOK Rigel – and the current batteries don’t charge in an external charger – you’ll know that the batteries are the source of the problem.

SMOK Rigel Not Vaping

If the SMOK Rigel doesn’t generate vapour when you press the fire button, you should make sure that the batteries are charged and that the device is turned on and unlocked. If the SMOK Rigel is off, press the fire button five times quickly to turn it on. If the device is locked, press the fire button three times to unlock it.

If the SMOK Rigel still isn’t vaping, it’s likely that the device doesn’t have a good electrical connection with the atomizer coil in the tank or that the coil itself has a problem. You may see an error message such as “Check Atomizer” or “Atomizer Short” on the screen confirming that.

  • If you see the message “Check Atomizer,” there is an issue with the connection between the SMOK Rigel and the atomizer coil. Remove the tank and make sure that there is no e-liquid in the threading at the top of the device. If you find e-liquid in the threading, remove it with a cotton swab. Reconnect the tank and try again. If you’re still unable to vape, disassemble the tank and remove the atomizer coil. Remove any condensation from the base of the tank. Reinstall the coil and reassemble the tank. If the SMOK Rigel still isn’t working, replace the atomizer coil.
  • If you see the message “Atomizer Short,” there is a problem with the atomizer coil. Replace the coil.
