A Beginners’ Guide to Vaping

So you think that you want to stop smoking and start vaping? Confused by the terminology and by the benefits of vaping? Read on to learn all about the technical terms, the health benefits and how to set yourself up!

What is an electronic cigarette?

An electronic cigarette, often referred to as an e-cigarette is a small, portable unit which essentially mimics a traditional cigarette in that it is smoked and provides a “hit” but it has a number of important differences.

Electronic cigarettes are filled with a special liquid called eliquid which contains nicotine but does not contain the harmful chemicals which are present in cigarettes. The liquid is vaporized within the atomizer of the unit and provides the user with a “hit” of nicotine which feels very similar to that of a traditional cigarette…and it even produces “smoke” which is in fact not smoke but contains propylene glycol which is used in creating special effects smoke on stage and in films.

Users purchase their electronic cigarette and a charger to power it up and along with this equipment, a supply of eliquid in a small bottle. The user fills the electronic cigarette with the eliquid and that’s it! You can vape away and begin the journey to giving up smoking in a much more comfortable fashion than going cold turkey.

Most good quality eliquids contain the following ingredients.

  • Propylene glycol
  • Vegetable glycerine
  • Nicotine
  • Flavourings

That’s a pretty innocuous list compared to what’s in the average cigarette! The propylene glycol provides the “smoke”, the glycerine is the base, the nicotine is what keeps vapers satisfied whilst the flavourings are there for obvious reasons!

Different types of electronic cigarette

As the demand for electronic cigarettes has grown, manufacturers have created a variety of types of electronic cigarette and they are as follows.

  • Disposable electronic cigarettes: This type of electronic cigarette is as you’d imagine, designed for single use. These are good for those people who don’t like to fuss around with re-filling their electronic cigarettes or for those people who just want to use them on a temporary basis…perhaps whilst visiting an area where smoking is banned.
  • Two and three part electronic cigarettes: When electronic cigarettes were first marketed, they usually had three parts which consisted of a cartridge, a battery and an atomizer. These three parts all fitted together. While you can still purchase this type, some people prefer a newer version which consists of only two parts. Manufacturers began building the atomizer into a disposable cartridge which is simpler to manage for users and also seem to malfunction less.
  • Variable voltage electronic cigarettes: These are designed to allow users to vary the strength of the vape…so if you’re beginning to wean yourself off your electronic cigarette then you can choose to use less power or similarly if you’re using a flavour which you’d like to dull slightly, you can do this easily.
  • Mods: Mods are handmade individual designed electronic cigarettes which are often built by hobbyists or craftspeople. You do need to be careful when purchasing this type of electronic cigarette as it won’t have been subjected to the rigorous us testing which commercial models will have been put through.

How to choose the right strength of eliquid

Depending on how many cigarettes you smoke per day and on the strength of the cigarettes you choose, you need to select your eliquid according to this habit. A good guideline is to begin with 1.2% strength if you smoke mild cigarettes and perhaps a 1.8% if you normally smoke regular strength. If you’re a smoker of strong cigarettes then choose 2.4% to satisfy your habit. You can always drop down a level once you’re used to vaping and feel ready to change.

Which flavour to choose?

This is a highly personal selection and most beginners will choose something which tastes like their own tobacco. This is a good idea as vaping is quite a change from smoking and the familiarity of the taste of tobacco can certainly help you to adjust. Once you’re used to vaping it can be fun to experiment and to choose some of the more unusual flavours from the wide range available today. Fruit flavours are a popular first option and many people also enjoy flavours such as vanilla, tobacco mix or even more unusually coffee or mint!

Vaping is a new way to improve your health, to assist you in giving up smoking and of course to save money. It is estimated that making the switch from smoking to vaping can save the average smoker of twenty cigarettes per day up to two thousand pounds a year! That’s not a small saving…it’s actually a huge saving and for this reason alone, many people are discovering more about the world of vaping and then getting on board.
