How long do vapes last? That sounds like it should have a straightforward answer, but it can actually mean several completely different things.
You might be asking how long a rechargeable vape device lasts before you need to replace it. You might mean how long a battery lasts between charges, how often you need a new pod or coil, or how many days you'll get from a pre-filled big puff vape before its e-liquid runs out.
Those are all different lifespans.
A good rechargeable device may remain usable for many months or even years, while the pod or coil inside it could need replacing every week or two. A big puff vape works differently again: the battery is reusable, while the pre-filled e-liquid section is the part you regularly replace.
This guide breaks down how long vapes last piece by piece so you'll know what actually needs replacing — and when.
Quick answer: A good rechargeable vape can remain in service for many months or years if it isn't damaged and its battery still performs well. Pods and coils commonly last around one to two weeks, although very sweet e-liquid, heavy use and high power can shorten that considerably. For 20 mg/ml big puff vapes, around 2 ml of e-liquid per day is a useful moderate-use estimate, so a 12 ml system might last roughly six days and a 20 ml system roughly ten days.

Those figures are guidelines, not timers. You don't need to throw a perfectly good coil away because Tuesday happens to be its seventh birthday, and you shouldn't keep using a burnt pod simply because you were hoping to get two weeks from it.
The actual device — the part containing the battery, electronics, sensor, buttons and charging port — should normally last much longer than its consumable parts.
There's no sensible rule saying that every vape needs replacing after six months or one year.
A well-made refillable pod kit may remain completely usable for a long time if:
Eventually, the built-in lithium-ion battery will lose some capacity through normal ageing and repeated charging. You may notice that a vape that once lasted all day begins needing a top-up much earlier.

A 1500 mAh MTL pod operating at low power may last much longer between charges than a 2500 mAh device being used for high-output DTL vaping.

For a typical modern replaceable coil or integrated pod, around one to two weeks is a reasonable starting expectation for moderate use.
That isn't guaranteed.
Some coils may start losing flavour after only four or five days, particularly if they're being used heavily with very sweet e-liquid. Others can remain enjoyable well beyond two weeks.
Current coil manufacturers themselves commonly describe one to two weeks as a normal lifespan while emphasising that liquid, wattage and frequency of use can change the result substantially.

Sweet and heavily flavoured e-liquids tend to leave more residue on the heating surface and wick.
As that residue accumulates, flavour becomes progressively darker, muddier or less accurate.
A coil running at 50 watts processes far more e-liquid and heat than a small MTL coil running at 12 watts.
Greater vapour production generally means faster consumable wear.
The wick needs a little time to absorb fresh e-liquid after each puff. Repeated long puffs with almost no pause can cause the wick to become too dry and shorten the coil's life.
If the e-liquid drops below the wick openings, part of the cotton can dry out. One bad dry hit can permanently spoil an otherwise new coil.
Very thick high-VG liquid may wick poorly in a small MTL pod, while excessively thin liquid can flood a coil designed for thicker juice.
Don't rely entirely on the calendar. Replace your coil or pod when its performance tells you that it's finished.

The pod and coil are one unit, which is extremely common on modern refillable pod kits.
When the coil wears out, you replace the complete pod. The pod's useful lifespan is therefore essentially the same as the coil's lifespan — commonly around one or two weeks, but potentially shorter or longer.
The plastic pod and heating element are separate components.
You can usually replace the coil several times while keeping the same pod. Replace the pod itself when it cracks, leaks, becomes damaged or its seals no longer work reliably.
This distinction matters when you're working out running costs. A packet of integrated-coil pods costs more per cartridge than a single replaceable coil, but it also gives you a completely fresh pod and seals every time.
It can, particularly with lighter use and an e-liquid that's easy on coils.
Modern coil technology is also improving. Some manufacturers now design dual-mesh pods specifically to spread heating across multiple elements and extend usable lifespan.

Single-use disposable vapes can no longer legally be sold in the UK. Today's big puff vapes use rechargeable batteries with replaceable pre-filled pods or refill containers.

They're not.
There is no universal real-world definition of a “puff.”
A short laboratory-style draw uses much less e-liquid than a long, deep inhale. Power level, coil design and airflow can also affect how much liquid the device vaporises each time you use it.
As a result, advertised puff counts are best treated as comparative marketing estimates rather than literal promises.
The current big-puff market demonstrates the problem nicely. Products containing broadly similar amounts of e-liquid can carry dramatically different advertised puff counts.
If one manufacturer says 10 ml delivers 10,000 puffs while another claims a little over twice that amount delivers 35,000, those figures obviously aren't based on one standard-sized puff.
A much better comparison: Ignore the impressive number on the front of the box for a moment and look at how many millilitres of e-liquid the device actually contains. E-liquid capacity gives you a far more consistent basis for comparing how long different big puff vapes should last.
Modern UK big puff designs use several different arrangements.

There is no single average that works for every vaper.
Someone using 3 mg e-liquid in a high-output sub-ohm vape may consume several times as much liquid as someone using 20 mg nic salt in a low-powered MTL device.

Using 2 ml per day as a middle-of-the-road estimate for a 20 mg/ml MTL vaper gives us a much more useful comparison than advertised puff counts.

If you use only 1 ml per day, double those estimates. If you regularly use 4 ml per day, halve them.
That's the advantage of using capacity instead of puff counts: once you know roughly how much e-liquid you consume, you can estimate the lifespan of almost any big puff vape.

Start a fresh 10 ml bottle and note how many days it takes you to finish it.

A lighter user might get two days or more, while a heavier user may finish one before the end of the day.
The difference compared with a refillable pod is simply what happens next:

A 12 ml big puff system might contain enough vape juice for several days, but the rechargeable battery doesn't necessarily hold enough energy to vaporise all 12 ml on one charge.

The point of the rechargeable battery isn't to last until every drop of e-liquid is gone. It's to remain reusable after the pre-filled section has been replaced.

A reusable tank or empty pod can potentially last far longer than the coil inside it.
There's no need to replace a tank because you've gone through a certain number of coils.
Keep using it until something actually wears out.
Replace a tank or reusable empty pod if:
A tank that remains clean, intact and leak-free can potentially outlive many coils.
Removable lithium-ion batteries gradually lose capacity as they age and accumulate charge cycles, but there's no need to throw a healthy battery away on an arbitrary anniversary.
Replace a removable cell if:
Physical condition matters more than whether the battery is exactly 11 months or 13 months old.
That depends on which type of “lasting” matters to you.
A large pre-filled big puff device can go several days or potentially longer before its e-liquid assembly needs replacing.
A low-powered refillable pod using a coil-friendly liquid can potentially last weeks between pod changes.
A large battery paired with a relatively low-powered coil will usually provide the best runtime between charges.
A well-built rechargeable vape with replaceable consumables can potentially remain in use for years, provided that the electronics and battery remain healthy.
There isn't one device that wins every category.
A refillable vape kit will generally have a higher initial cost but gives you access to bottled e-liquid, which usually makes it the more economical long-term option.
Big puff vapes prioritise convenience. You don't need to carry bottles or fill pods manually, but you're buying proprietary pre-filled replacements.
When comparing two big puff systems, don't just compare the starter-kit price. Check:

Don't estimate lifespan from the advertised puff count alone. Check the e-liquid capacity instead. Many so-called 6,000-puff devices contain around 12 ml of e-liquid, which would last roughly six days at 2 ml per day.
If the device contains 10 ml of e-liquid, a moderate user consuming around 2 ml per day would get roughly five days. The advertised 10,000-puff figure shouldn't be interpreted as a guaranteed number of real-world inhales.
Look at the amount of e-liquid rather than the 30,000-puff label. A 20 ml device would last roughly ten days at an average consumption of 2 ml per day. Your actual use may be higher or lower.
They're best treated as estimates. Puff duration and vaping style aren't standardised between users or manufacturers, so advertised puff counts aren't a particularly reliable way to compare products with one another. Total e-liquid capacity is much more useful.
It varies greatly with nicotine strength and device power. For a moderate 20 mg/ml MTL user, around 2 ml per day is a useful estimating figure. High-output users vaping low-nicotine e-liquid can consume several times as much.
At 2 ml per day, a 10 ml bottle lasts about five days. At 1 ml per day it lasts ten days, while someone consuming 5 ml daily will finish it in two days.
You don't need to replace the entire device just because a pod or coil has worn out. Replace the vape itself when the battery or electronics deteriorate significantly, the device is physically damaged or it no longer operates reliably with good consumable parts.
The easiest way to answer “how long do vapes last?” is to stop treating a vape as one item.
The device might last for years. Its battery charge might last a day or two. Its coil might last a week or two. Its pod could last one coil or several, depending on the design. A big puff refill might last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on its e-liquid capacity and how much you vape.
For big puff devices in particular, the most useful number isn't the enormous puff count printed on the box. It's the much less exciting number beside “e-liquid capacity.”
If you know that you typically use about 2 ml per day, the maths becomes refreshingly simple. Twelve millilitres is roughly six days. Twenty millilitres is roughly ten. Twenty-two millilitres is roughly eleven.
It's not quite as exciting as promising 35,000 puffs, admittedly, but it has the considerable advantage of actually helping you work out how long the thing is likely to last.
